Manager Shaun Gale started to evaluate his new side in earnest at Selsey yesterday, where the Hawks opened their pre-season campaign with a confident 2-0 win against the Sussex County Division One side.

New signing Manny Williams opened the scoring after just five minutes when he smashed former Salisbury midfielder Brian Dutton’s cross into the Selsey keeper, only for the ball to rebound into him and back over the line. Gosport Borough forward Gary Norgate doubled the lead from the penalty spot ten minutes into the second half after he was brought down in the box.

The Hawks fielded two sides for the match, with what seemed an approximation of the club’s strongest starting eleven in the first.

Williams formed the left side of a three man front line that saw Mustafa Tiryaki in the middle and Luke Nightingale on the right. The midfield featured Steven Walker and Shaun Wilkinson, alongside trialist Dutton. At the back Nathan Ashmore stood behind new club captain Ian Simpemba and Jay Gasson, with Sam Pearce and Gary MacDonald either side.

The Hawks maintained possession for much of the half and looked surprisingly at ease for a side featuring many faces playing their first game. MacDonald’s controlling presence at left back brought memories flooding back from his previous tenure with the Hawks, and Tiryaki and Williams were extremely active at the front.

The second half featured a different team, comprised entirely of trial players except for Guy Butters and Paul Hinschelwood. Of note among the new faces were; Hayes and Yeading keeper Aaron Howe, who played 18 league games for United last season; former Basingstoke and Farnborough defender Tyrone Smith; Sutton United striker Craig Dundas; and Woking front man Goma Lambu.

The match became more equal affair, but given the side featured eleven players who had never played together before, the Hawks maintained their composure and eventually ran out easy winners on the rain soaked pitch.

Note, no teamsheet or programme were produced for this game, as such Selsey's teamlist was unavailable
