|Gary joined the club on loan from Portsmouth at the end of the 1999/00 season, where he had been a first year professional, and impressed enough to be offered a contact in the close season. Moving from Left Defence to Wing Back, he was responsible for setting up numerous goals with his ability to place extremely accurate crosses. It was his audacious lob during the FA Cup fourth qualifying round match against Barnet in October 2001 that forced a draw, to take the Hawks to a high profile replay at the Bees' Underhill Stadium. Looking for more regular first team football Gary left the Hawks to join Eastern Division Bashley in September 2002, but returned on loan in January 2004 to help the Hawks through a period of heavy injury.
