South Downs Saturday friendly report

Saturday morning friendly win for Many Shades
The Many Shades were in action early on St Pat’s Day morning, playing a friendly against South Downs Saturday (SDS) in a match arranged through Pete James’ connection with both sides. Pete diplomatically stood aside for this one!

Making his debut for the Many Shades was former Havant Town ‘keeper Darryl Horn, and early on he found out that walking football can be just as harsh as the full-on version when he pulled off a great save only for the rebounding ball to hit defender Barry Ingram and roll agonisingly over the line for an unfortunate own goal.

Reorganising by putting a man on SDS’s playmaker, Emsworth & Hayling’s Tony Coombes, the Many Shades began to get more of a grip on the game, and equalised thanks to a Bobby De Ste Croix thunderbolt (yes, really!) in the third quarter, the Many Shades' 250th competitive goal.

In the final quarter we continued with our solid shape and were rewarded when Derek Pope burst through the middle to shoot home. The shot took a deflection, but Derek assures us it was going in anyway (apparently). With just a couple of minutes left it looked like Bobby D would wrap up the win when through one-on-one, but the SDS keeper pulled off a good save. Soon after that it ended with a hard-earned 2-1 win for the Many Shades.

Your Many Shades of Grey line up was: Darryl Horn, Barry Ingram, Pete Dolamore, Barry Tindall, Stew Russell, James McIlwaine, Derek Pope, and Bobby De Ste Croix. Huge thanks for the touchline instructions from Micky “Gaffer” Wallis, and of course to referee Dave Rowbrey.
